The Berti Vogts years

There's a tendency to sugarcoat Berti Vogts' only full campaign in charge, not least because we beat Holland at home in the first leg of the playoff.

But, you know, we lost the return game SIX-NIL. We were also two down after twelve minutes in the Faroes (and damned fortunate to escape with a point). Vogts had a pretty lousy set of players to choose from - Maurice Ross, Stephen Crainey, Paul Devlin, Scott Dobie, Kevin Kyle, Andy Gray and Paul Dickov were amongst those to strut their stuff - but probably didn't get the most out of them either, other than in the home game with the Germans.

Even with Iceland being the third best team in an otherwise weak group we still needed to scrape past Lithuania in the final game to make the playoffs, having lost there to a penalty given for the striker kicking Jackie McNamara's shin. But because we made the playoffs we could convince ourselves that McVogts was making progress.

He wasn't.

It tells you something that the highlight of the campaign was Christian Dailly's epic reaction to the defeat away to Germany. "CHRISTIAN!"
